Did you know a galleon like this carried more than twenty sails, and that it took dozens of sailors just to work them? Square sails push the ship along when the wind blows from behind, which is why pirates chose routes where the winds were steady. On this page the ship sails with its canvas fully spread, the rigging ropes clearly drawn and waves breaking against the hull. To color it, use warm browns for the wooden hull, cream or pale beige for the sails — they were almost never pure white — and several blues for the sea, darker below and lighter in the foam. The seagulls look best in light grey.
