The basket at the top of the mast is called the crow's nest, and it was the best lookout post on the ship: from thirty metres up you can see almost twice as far as from the deck. The youngest, lightest crew members usually went up, climbing those rope ladders with astonishing skill. On this page the cabin boy climbs with a bandana on his head, surrounded by taut ropes with a furled sail behind him. Color the bandana red, the shirt white or cream, the rolled-up trousers blue, the ropes beige and the mast wood brown.
