Wolves do not howl at the moon: they howl to locate one another, and the sound can carry up to ten kilometres across open country. Each wolf has its own howl, so the pack knows who is calling. Cubs start practising at around a month old, and at first their voices crack in a rather funny way. This wolf cub sits on a rock with its muzzle raised, pines and a full moon behind it. Color it grey with a lighter chest and muzzle and an almost charcoal back. The pines in dark green, the rock in grey and the moon in pale yellow or simply left white.
