To get out of the egg, a chick uses a tool it has before it is even born: a hard little bump on the tip of its beak called an egg tooth, which it uses to hammer the shell from the inside until it cracks. It can take several hours and the chick does it alone; the tooth falls off a few days later. On this page the chick is still sitting in the broken half of its shell, surrounded by straw with two whole eggs beside it. Color it bright yellow with an orange beak and feet, the shell white with a faintly grey inside, and the straw in toasted yellow and ochre.
