Count the petals of the flowers you come across and you will see the same numbers repeating: three, five, eight, thirteen. They belong to a series discovered by an Italian mathematician eight hundred years ago, and it shows up in flowers because that is how petals fit around a stem without covering one another. This mandala is the simplest of the set: just four rings of large shapes, meant for younger children or for coloring with thick markers and crayons. Two or three colors are plenty — pick one for the petals, one for the leaves and one for the central circle, then repeat them outward.
