If you have ever noticed a whitish dust on the skin of a plum, it is not dirt: it is called bloom, a natural waxy layer the fruit produces to protect itself from the sun and from drying out. One brush of a finger wipes it away. This page shows three plums hanging from a slender branch with oval leaves, and one cut in half revealing the stone. Plum varieties differ enormously, so you can take your pick: deep purple, bright red or golden yellow. The flesh is usually a greenish yellow, and the stone a light brown with a rough, pitted surface.
