A pineapple takes almost two years to grow, and it does not hang from a tree at all: it rises from the middle of a low plant whose long, spiky leaves fan out from the ground like a star. This page shows one standing tall, with its diamond-patterned skin and the pointed crown that makes it impossible to mistake for anything else. Those diamonds are wonderful to color one at a time: start with a golden yellow all over, then darken a few of them with orange or light brown so the rind really looks rough and bumpy. Give the crown a strong green, keeping the front leaves lighter than the ones behind, and the whole drawing will suddenly look deep and real.
