Pears have an unusual habit: they ripen better after being picked than while hanging on the tree, which is why growers gather them while they are still firm. In this drawing two pears hang together from the same branch, one partly hiding the other, seen slightly from below among long narrow leaves. That angle makes it feel as if you were standing under the pear tree looking up. You can choose the pale green of a juicy summer pear, the golden yellow of a very ripe one, or the reddish brown of the rough-skinned varieties. Here is a nice trick: leave a small unpainted highlight on the side of each pear and they will instantly look shiny.
