Wooden nutcrackers were born more than two hundred years ago in the Erzgebirge mountains of Germany, where carvers shaped them as soldiers or kings that cracked nuts with a lever at the back. They became famous around the world thanks to Tchaikovsky's ballet. This page shows one standing tall, with his high hat, epaulettes, the buttons down his jacket and the fine lines that mark the wooden joints. The traditional colors are red for the jacket, blue or black for the trousers, and gold on the buttons and shoulder pieces. His hair and beard look best in white or a very pale gray.
