Melons are close relatives of cucumbers and pumpkins, and the netting across their rind is not decoration: it forms when the skin cracks as the fruit swells and those cracks heal over into raised lines. The more pronounced the netting, the riper the melon usually is. This page shows a whole melon covered in that texture and a cut wedge revealing the seeds in the middle, plus a leaf and a curling tendril. The rind calls for a grayish green with the netting in a lighter tone, and the flesh for a soft orange or a very pale green, depending on the variety you imagine.
