The fig hides one of the strangest tricks in the plant world: it is not really a fruit but a bundle of tiny flowers that grow inward. That is why you will never see a fig tree in bloom — the flowers are all sealed inside what we later eat. This page shows three figs on a branch with the big lobed leaves typical of a fig tree, and one split open revealing the mass of filaments inside. The skin can be deep purple or yellowish green, since both varieties exist. The interior wants a strong pink near the middle, fading paler toward the rim, and the leaves a rich green.
