A newborn koala is the size of a bean and spends six months inside its mother's pouch; when it comes out, it climbs onto her back and rides there for several months more. Koalas sleep up to twenty hours a day because the eucalyptus leaves they eat give very little energy and take ages to digest. On this page the joey rides on its mother's back as she hugs the trunk, with long leaves hanging above. Color them light grey with an almost white chest and inner ears, the big nose in very dark grey, the trunk brown and the eucalyptus leaves blue-green.
