An anchor does not hold a ship by its weight, as it seems: what keeps the ship still are those curved arms that dig into the sea floor and bite the sand when the chain pulls. That is why they have such a distinctive shape, one that has barely changed in two thousand years. This one rests on the bottom, a thick rope coiled around its shank and corals and shells growing around it. Color it dark grey or blue-black with touches of orange rust along the edges, the rope beige, the corals pink and orange, and the sea floor a soft blue-green.
