The black-and-white ball everyone draws has twelve pentagons and twenty hexagons, thirty-two panels in all, and that design became famous at the 1970 World Cup for a very practical reason: it was the first tournament broadcast worldwide on television, and the mix of light and dark patches was the easiest to make out on black-and-white screens. Before that, balls were brown leather with a seam down one side. Here it is in close-up, resting on the grass. Color the pentagons black and the hexagons white — or swap the black for whatever color you like.
