Basketball was invented in a single day. In 1891 a gym teacher needed an indoor game for the winter, nailed two peach baskets to the gymnasium wall and wrote thirteen rules. The catch was that the baskets still had bottoms: every time someone scored, a ladder was needed to fish the ball out, until somebody thought to cut them open. Today the hoop sits three metres and five centimetres above the floor. On this page the player leaps with her arm extended to lay the ball in. Color the ball orange with black seam lines, the ring red and the net a greyish white.
