An octopus arm can bend at any point and in any direction, and that has driven more than one engineer to despair: copying that flexibility is so hard that an entire branch of robotics is devoted to soft machines. Real octopus-inspired robots are already used to pick up fragile things underwater, because a soft arm can hold a shell without crushing it. This underwater robot has eight jointed tentacles curling in different directions, a dome-shaped body, a round porthole at the front and two arms holding a sunken amphora. Color the dome copper or bronze, the tentacles metallic grey with darker joints, the porthole light blue, and the sea floor in ever deeper blues.
