A mandarin peels apart with your fingers and almost no effort, and there is a reason for that: its skin clings to the segments far more loosely than an orange's does, so it lifts away on its own. Its name comes from China, where the fruit originally grew. This drawing shows a whole mandarin with two leaves still attached and another already peeled, broken into loose segments, with the curled peel beside it. Orange is the star here, but try a slightly redder tone for the skin and a lighter, juicier one for the segments. Give the leaves a glossy dark green with an unpainted highlight down the middle.
