Skateboarding was born out of sheer boredom. In 1950s California, surfers had nothing to do on flat days, so they bolted roller-skate wheels to a wooden plank to "surf" the pavements — they called it sidewalk surfing at first. The earliest ramps were empty swimming pools: during a drought people drained them and discovered that the curved walls were perfect for building speed. Here the boy hangs in the air above the lip of the ramp, grabbing his board. Color the deck and helmet in bright shades, the wheels in a pale tone and the ramp in concrete grey.
