The rugby ball is oval for a decidedly unglamorous reason: the first ones were made from inflated pig bladders, and that was simply their shape. When leather balls came along the oval stayed, and it turned out to bounce unpredictably — something the game rather liked. The strangest rule in rugby is that the ball may not be passed forward with the hands: to move up the field you have to run with it or kick it. Here the player runs with the oval tucked under one arm. Color the shirt in wide two-tone hoops, the shorts white, the socks dark and the grass green.
