We owe the word cell to Robert Hooke, who in 1665 looked at a wafer-thin slice of cork through his microscope and saw a mass of neat little compartments that reminded him of the cells in a monastery. A few years later a Dutch merchant named Leeuwenhoek ground his own lenses, examined a drop of stagnant water and became the first human being ever to watch bacteria moving about. This page shows a classroom microscope with its heavy base, the eyepiece tube, a turret of three objective lenses and the stage with its clips. Color it in metallic gray and black, the stage a shade darker, and keep the glass slide and the leaf pale.
