A blackboard is called that because the first ones really were slate, a stone that splits into wafer-thin sheets and takes chalk without wearing away. The big wall-mounted ones, which let a whole class look at the same spot, appeared about two hundred years ago and completely changed how lessons worked: before that every pupil wrote on a little tablet of their own. Try dark green for the board, pale wood for the desks and a soft blue on the wall.
