Even though the common pencil is called a "lead pencil" in several languages, there is no lead inside at all: the core is graphite mixed with clay, and the more clay it holds, the harder it writes. Colored pencils use a different recipe — pigment blended with wax — which is why they leave that creamy line you can smudge with a fingertip. This page shows a cup crammed with pencils of different heights, plus scissors, a paintbrush, a sharpener with a curled shaving and an eraser. The fun part is coloring every pencil the shade it would really be, leaving the sharpened wooden tip pale so the point still shows.
