Karate literally means "empty hand", and the name tells its story: it was born on the island of Okinawa, in Japan, at a time when weapons were banned, so people learned to defend themselves with nothing in their hands. The colored belts are not as old as you might think — they were introduced little more than a century ago so each student could tell where they stand on the path, always starting from white. Here the karateka throws a high kick with fists guarding. Color the gi in off-white so the folds still show, and pick a belt color: yellow, orange, green, blue, brown or black.
