The ribbon in rhythmic gymnastics is six metres long and comes with one unforgiving rule: it may not stay still for a single instant. If the tip touches the floor and stops, the judges deduct points, so the gymnast draws spirals, snakes and circles non-stop through the whole routine while leaping and turning. It is one of the few sports where the apparatus weighs only a few grams and is still the hardest thing to control.
