Long before it showed up in witch stories, the cauldron was the most important appliance in any kitchen: for centuries families hung an iron pot over the fire and cooked everything in it. Its three legs are there so it can stand right among the embers, and iron holds heat so well that the food stays warm for hours. On this page the cauldron bubbles over a pile of logs, with a wooden ladle resting on the rim and glass bottles beside it. Color it in a near-black dark gray with a few pale highlights, the fire in orange and yellow, the brew in green, and the bottles in purple and amber.
