A sailboat needs no engine at all: it moves on nothing but the push of the wind against its sails. And though it sounds impossible, it can even travel almost straight into the wind by zigzagging, a maneuver sailors call tacking. On this page the boat cuts across gentle waves with both sails full, while gulls wheel overhead and a lighthouse stands out on the horizon. The sails look wonderful left pure white or striped with color, the hull in navy blue, red or natural wood, and the sea in several shades of blue, darker below and lighter near the surface. Lighthouses are usually painted in red and white bands.
