An owl can turn its head almost three quarters of the way around because it has twice as many neck bones as we do, and it needs them: its eyes are so large that they cannot move inside the skull. On top of that, the edge of each flight feather is combed like a fine saw, breaking up the air so the bird flies in complete silence. Here one perches face-on across a bare branch, outlined against a huge full moon. Use browns, ochres and cream across the plumage, a shade darker on the folded wings, bright amber or orange for the eyes, gray for the talons and a very pale yellow for the moon.
