A burning candle does not actually burn the wax directly: the heat of the flame melts it, the wick draws it up and turns it into vapor, and it is that vapor which catches fire. That is why the flame always floats a little above the wick. This page shows a thick candle with wax dripping down its sides, resting on a round holder surrounded by pine branches, cones and holly berries. The candle can be red, white or gold, and the flame yellow with an orange center. Leave the glow around it unpainted and it will really look as though the candle is shining.
