Gingerbread houses became fashionable in Germany after the tale of Hansel and Gretel was published, in which the two children find a cottage made of sweets deep in the forest. The gingerbread itself calls for a warm, slightly orange brown, while the icing looks best pure white, so you can simply leave it unpainted.
